Section Covers Sets A-L

In Year 3, Baby Ponies were born; they would become immensely popular and well loved by all My Little Pony mommies.  Aside from Baby Ponies and the classic Megan and Sundance, many ponies from Year 3 were second sets.  The Rainbow Ponies, Unicorns and Pegasus, Earth Ponies, and Sea Ponies were all second releases.

About the new editions to the family:  Baby Sea Ponies and Baby Ponies were added in this year. Baby Ponies came with the most accessories ever sold (aside from playsets), they came with a bottle, diaper, and other accessories.   Baby Sea Ponies came with a special float (instead of a shell like adult Sea Ponies).

In 1984, Firefly's Adventure was released as a television special; My Little Pony had officially made it into television.  A very public figure on television, Megan was made into a doll and sold with Sundance.  The pair would always be sold together, and sold in several different releases.

Another baby pony named Ember would become part of the pony line as well.  She was sold as a Mail Order this year, as well as another version that came with a tape. Related 1984 Ponies:  Accessory Playsets, Baby Cuddles (with Baby Buggy), Baby Tiddlywinks (Non Beddy Bye Eyes version; came with Lullabye Nursery).  Mail Order:  Baby Ember (three versions).

Baby Ponies

freckles.jpg (4707 bytes)Baby Ponies were unique and very collectible.  The unicorns and Pegasushave glittery symbols and the earth ponies have painted symbols.  The earth ponies also have freckles (close up pictured right) and the unicorns have the colored streak in the hair.  Each came with a ton of accessories.  These ponies would become the forerunners for most Baby Pony poses (except Newborns and Teeny Tiny Ponies).  All of these ponies have corresponding mothers.  These came with the first baby accessories, a trend that would run up until the late years of My Little Pony.  Accessories included:  stack toys, blankets, play pens, bottles, diapers, etc. Click here to see the Baby Ponies mint in the original packages!

Also in the U. S. special Mail Order Versions of the Baby Ponies (Pearlized Baby Ponies) were released; these had pearly bodies.  They were essentially the same as the regulars in color (with slight color differences); Baby Moondancer's name was changed to Baby Moondreamer.  There are German versions of the U. S. Baby Ponies that have glittery symbols that do not have glittery symbols. These were sold in the U. K. and abroad.

Baby Sea Ponies

fintips.jpg (6402 bytes)Baby Sea Ponies were the first edition of several to follow.  All editions came with floats, though different designs of floats were added later on.  Sea Ponies were special seahorse type ponies, with the standard My Little Pony head shape.  Each had a ball type weight in it to balance the body and make it actually float in the water.  There is a small round hole behind one of the ears torelease water (close up pictured right).   Each Sea Pony has comb-able hair, with a mane much like that of any regular pony.  These versions have a forelock.  They also have colored fin tips that closely match their hair color.  Pictured right is a close up of a Baby Sea Pony's side and dorsal fins. Earth Ponies

Earth Ponies is also a slang term of sorts.  It identifies that the pony has no horn, wings, or other outstanding features.   These ponies are the second edition of Earth Ponies.  The first set includes Bowtie, Applejack, Seashell and Bubbles.  None of the new version (not counting reissues) has a blaze or freckles.  Though curly haired versions of Applejack and Bowtie are reissued with this set. The second set came with new colors and styles.  Three of these went on to become So Soft Ponies in Year 4.  Tootsie was only produced once in the U. S.  There are only two different poses between these.  The strutting pose and the standing pose that is shown in photographs below.   Click here to see the Earth Ponies mint in the original packages! Ember and "Ember's Dream" Cassette

Ember
(store version) is lavender with purple hair and a white star.  She has dark purple eyes.
The store version of ember came with a tape and was called "Ember's Dream."   She is often referred to as the very first baby pony, ember with a star, or the store version of Ember.

The Tape itself, "Ember's Dream is about her wanting to be like the Rainbow Ponies.  She coveted their beauty she wanted to be like they were.  She had a dream that a man would come and steal their lovely locks (for personal profit).  She warned them, they didn't listen, and Ember's dream came to life.  The Rainbow Ponies had short hair for a while.

She is almost technically an accessory item instead of a pony item, since did come with the tape and was sold more under the Listen 'n Fun title instead of the My Little Pony title. She is also listed under accessories.

Three other versions of Ember were available through mail order:  blue, pink, and lavender with no symbols.   It's odd that there are four Embers, why, no one knows.

Odd fact:  You may also hear her referred to as Amber.  It's not really a mispronunciation because there were cassette tapes sold with Amber instead of Ember.
