My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-P)
Year 4 (1985)

Year 4 was a huge year for the My Little Pony line, having some of the most famous and most infamous characters. The launch of My Little Pony: The Movie was nearing and Dream Valley was all ablaze.
Probably some of the most remembered characters were the Flutter Ponies, starring in the pony movie. They are lovely petite bodied ponies with thin, delicate wings (the bane of every child's existence; I believe all of mine were broken within the first week). Following the fame of the Flutter Ponies are the less popular Beddy Bye Eyes Ponies (most people either love them or hate them). These ponies came with many accessories and were the babies that could actually sleep and wake.
Another version of Megan and Sundance were released, and also now Molly and Baby Sundance. A special Party Gift Pack was also released, with five ponies and so many accessories. Another issue of Baby Sea Ponies would be issued, but they would be the only second edition (except Megan and Sundance).
Two new innovations came along this year (and would be released the next year as well): So Soft Ponies and Twinkle Eyed Ponies. One pony had was soft like real ponies and one had big sparkly eyes.
Also, perhaps one of the most famous playsets released, the Paradise Estate. This also had a relation to the movie, being where the ponies moved after the Dream Castle was destroyed. The fascination with the Paradise Estate lays partly in the hundreds of little accessories that came with the playset.

Beddy-Bye Eyes Ponies
Each of these baby ponies has special beddy bye
eyes. Each eye has an
almost glasslike appearance and small black eyelashes. Above the eye is a
darker color, like an eyeliner (close up pictured right). The eye remains
open while standing but when the pony is put to bed her eyes close. You
might also note the more oddly shaped bodies and heads of these ponies.
The odd shape is due to the eye mechanism being able to work.
Beddy-Bye Eye Ponies only came with one edition, but
several Beddy-Bye Eyes Ponies were sold with various playsets or mail
orders.
Other Beddy Bye Eyes Ponies not included in this
set are: Baby Frosting (top, first) from the Party
Pack, Baby Half Note (top, second) from the Baby
Bonnet School of Dance, Baby Sleepy Pie (third row, third) from the Pony
Purse, and Baby Tiddlywinks from the Lullabye
Nursery (third row, last). Also, Baby Cuddles (not pictured) came with
the Baby
Buggy. All standard store version Beddy Bye Eyes Ponies were Year 4
releases.
Beddy-Bye Eyes ponies have special poses, which support the opening and closing of the eyes. Though they are similar to other pony poses, they are unique only to Beddy-Eyes Pony. There are three poses, the earth pony pose (similar to Ember's pose), unicorn pose (odd pose with right front leg bent slight and head very slightly turned), and the Pegasus pose (similar to the adult Heart Throb's pose).

The Flutter Ponies were a special kind of pony only
produced in two
editions and a few special sets like the Slumber Party Pack. They had small, slender bodies with shiny, thin
wings which were prone to break. The wings were not well constructed and broke very
easily between the small space of the wing and the tab (pictured right is a
close up of a repro flutter wing). Pictured below is the two wing holders
and the center button that was pressed to make them flutter. They
also have a small design on their cheek or forehead.
Many flutter ponies (even second editions) have variations; I wouldn't say that
one is harder to find than another. It's just a fluky thing that Hasbro
did. The variation
ponies have slightly larger eyes and flutters in
Rosedust's pose had a miniscule difference in the molding of the plastic.
These were sold in the U. K. and in Europe. There are also Spanish versions of Flutter Ponies.
Listing of all Flutter Ponies made:
First Edition: Rosedust, Lily, Morning Glory, Forget-Me-Not, Peach Blossom, Honeysuckle. Second Edition: Tropical Breeze, Wingsong, Wind Drifter, Cloud Puff. Party Pack: Yum Yum. Slumber Party Pack: Pink Dreams. Mail Order: Hollywood.
All Flutter Ponies originally have curly hair, the mane
is strung in a large curl and so is the tail. It is common for them to
loose this curl over time. It is also very common to find them without
wings.
Thanks so much to Lori for use of the group photographs below.
Forget-Me-Not is purple with white hair and purple flowers flowing down
her leg. She
has a
tiny forget-me-not underneath her left eye. She has blue eyes.

down her leg. She has blue eyes.

purple centers (that trail down her back leg).
She has a single pink blossom on her forehead. She has purple eyes.

Megan is the Earth girl that befriended the ponies, and Sundance
was her very special pony friend. This particular version of Megan is
the second edition. She varies from the
first edition Megan primarily in dress--she wears a purple floral dress
and the first edition of Megan wears a pink and white dress. There i
s
a very, very slight difference in their eyes, the second edition has less slant
on the eyes. Also she comes with lavender shoes instead of
pink.
So Soft Sundance (earth pony) is white with pink hair and pink hearts
and dots in a circular pattern (close up of symbol pictured right). She
has a so soft body, covered in an almost felt-like fuzz. She has blue
eyes. She came with a pink bridle.

Molly and Baby Sundance were amazingly
similar to the original Megan
and Sundance. Molly was Megan's little sister, and Baby Sundance was
Sundance's baby. They retain the same features and came with similar
accessories.
Molly is the Earth girl that came
with Baby Sundance. She is Megan's little sister,
and is a key character in many
of the stories and films. Her body is quite a bit smaller than her big
sister Megan.
This is the only version of Molly made. She has blonde hair, two pigtails,
and blue eyes. She is wearing a pink
and white dress; the dress is pink and the accents are white. She came with rainbow colored tights and white
shoes.

Baby Sundance (earth pony) is white with pink hair and
pink hearts and dots in a
circular
pattern (close up pictured right; the same symbol as adult Sundance). She was a Beddy-Bye Eyes pony, her
eyes open and close. Her eyes are blue and she has dark blue eye
shadow. She originally has curly hair and a forelock. Her
mother is Sundance.
Baby Sundance came with a pink bridle with a white flower in the center.
There is rumors of a U. K version that does not have Beddy Bye Eyes, and though
there are leaflets for her, she was never produced.
Baby Frosting (unicorn)
is a baby pony with beddy-bye
eyes who is
neon green with white hair and pink and white cakes with candles. She is
in the standard BBE unicorn pose. Her eyes are periwinkle and her eye
shadow is lavender. She is a Beddy Bye Eyes Pony.

Best Wishes (Pegasus) is a So
Soft Pony who is pink with golden hair and
blue and yellow candles. She has curly hair. She has blue eyes, same
color as candle symbol. She is in Whizzer's pose.

Celebrate (pretty 'n pearly baby sea pony) is white with purple hair and
came with purple with orange turtle float. She has aqua eyes and aqua fin
tips. She is a Pretty 'n Pearly Baby Sea Pony.
She has large fin tips (trait common to all Pretty 'n Pearly Baby Sea
Ponies). She came with a lavender and orange turtle float. Thanks
to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of the below photographs.
Party Time (earth pony) is a twinkle-eyed pony who is orange with pink,
white,
chartreuse, and blue hair.
Her symbol is pink and blue party hats. She is standing in Cupcake's pose
and has pink eyes. She is a Twinkle
Eyed Pony.

Yum Yum (flutter pony) is purple with chartreuse hair and purple and five
pink and yellow wrapped candies. She has a small wrapped candy on her
right cheek. She has yellow green eyes. She is a Flutter
Pony.
