My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-P)
Year 5 (1986)

Year 5 was an odd year for My Little Pony. Oddly enough, about half of the ponies sold are pretty hard to find. The other half, are pretty common. I'm not exactly why this is. Some new friends joined the other ponies. There were now Pony Friends, unique animals, in that classic style. There were also new Big Brother Ponies, that had special hats and bandanas. Also new were the Princess Ponies, royal ponies with bushwoolie pals. So Soft Sleepy Newborns were huge ponies that weren't really soft, but they were big and cute.
Twinkle Ponies and So Soft Ponies returned from Year 4 (and for some reason these new versions are harder to find than the old ones). Baby Sea Ponies returned with a new look. Also Baby Ponies now have a first tooth. Flutter Ponies returned with still frail wings, but bolder colors.
Other innovations include the Twice As Fancy Ponies that have symbols covering their entire bodies and Newborn Twins. The Newborn Twins were the smallest ponies yet. What's better than a cute, small baby pony? Two of them. They also came with quite a few accessories, all in doubles, of course.
The Party Pack from Year 4 was a birthday pack, this year a slumber pack would be issued. The Slumber Party pack came with all a pony needs to be happy. Also, several playsets were issued and specialty ponies with them.
Related 1986 Ponies: Accessory Playsets, Baby Crumpet (Pony Purse, Second Release), Scoops (Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe), Fifi (Perm Shoppe). Mail Order, Baby Blue Ribbon, Stockings.
Baby Pony
Friends
(or Pony Friends)

The Pony Friends was unique in that they were not ponies. These babies came in the forms of a giraffe, lion, camel, and zebra. Each had its own style, hair cut, colors, and symbols. Some had symbols on the rear, like Kingsley and Spunky, and some had symbols covering their entire bodies, Creamsicle and Zig Zag.
I have included the
actual photographs of these (instead of the cartoon insert), because I wanted
the body styles and hair clearly seen. An odd thing about the brochure
checklist (came in specially marked packaged of ponies), it pictures a cartoon
first tooth Sundance with the other Friends. Perhaps Hasbro meant to make
one and never did.
Creamsicle (giraffe) is yellow with white mane and tail.
Her symbol is tiny pink leaves on her side and neck, covering most of the sides
of her body.

Kingsley (lion) is pink with a dark pink mane and tail. Her symbol
is three blue paws on her sides. She has blue eyes and a blue nose and is
holding a paw in the air. She has blue eyes.

Spunky (camel) is blue with lavender, curly mane and tail. Her
symbol is a group of green triangles on her sides. She has green eyes and
is in a strutting pose. She is a camel and has one hump. She has
green eyes.

Zig Zag (zebra) is all pink with darker pink mane and tail. Her
symbol is aqua stripes all over her body. She has aqua eyes.

Baby Ponies with a First Tooth were a new edition to the
baby pony family. This
was
the only formal edition produced, but other playset ponies and mail orders and
other specials had a first tooth as well.
Every pony had a corresponding mother from various sets.
Pictured left to right: Baby Quackers, Baby Bouncy, Baby
Tic-Tac-Toe.
Bottom; Baby Lickety Split, Baby Northstar, Baby Fifi. Thanks to Joanne
for use of this photograph.
Baby Bouncy (Pegasus) is yellow with blue hair and a pink, yellow, and
blue ball.
She has blue eyes. Her mother was a So
Soft Pony, Year 4.
She originally has curly hair.

Baby Fifi (earth pony) is blue with white hair and has a pink streak in
her mane and two pink poodles. The are often easily confused for something
else, either called horses or other animals instead of dogs. She has blue
eyes. For this
reason, I have her symbol pictured below.
Her mother was a So
Soft Pony, Year 4.
Baby North Star (Pegasus) is pink with purple hair and a purple compass
with a blue star Northearthern of the compass. She has deep blue eyes. Unlike her mother's symbol, she did
not have E or W of the compass directions printed on her symbol.
Probably because her size is smaller and all four directions would take up to
much room.
Her mother was a So
Soft Pony, Year 4.

Baby Lickety Split (earth pony) is lavender with pink hair and three ice cream
cones. She has lavender eyes. The cone is dark pink and the ice cream is white.
Before this issue, there was a Beddy
Bye Eys version of Baby Lickety Split. There is an International
version of Baby Lickety Split without a first tooth.

Baby Quackers (earth pony) is white with blue, green, yellow, pink hair
and a yellow duck holding an orange umbrella. She has blue eyes. Her mother was a Twinkle
Eye Pony, Year 5.

(colors can be see on close up, right) with a

Big Brother Ponies (all earth ponies)
Big Brother Ponies brought some handsome boy ponies to the
herd. They
are larger than
the adult females and all in the same pose: bodies forward, all four feet equal
and straight (some have one hoof slightly tilted). They had special,
distinguishable hooves, each with molded, feathered feet (close up pictured
right). All adult males sold in the U. S. have this feature.
Some have curly hair and some have straight hair, but all have a different color
stripe in the mane. All Big Brothers and male ponies are earth
ponies.
Related Ponies: The coveted Mountain Boy Ponies were sold in Europe and the U. K. Loving Family Ponies (U. S. and U. K.) and Family Friends and Family Babies all have male ponies in the same pose as the Big Brother Ponies. Also, Coat 'n Tails shares the same mold, being the only Mail Order with a male pony mold.
There are also three new Big Brother Ponies that will be produced the following year, Year 6.
Quarterback is all blue with a white streak and a purple and white football.
He has purple eyes. He came with
a pink
football helmet and a pink bandana.

Steamer is pink with pink hair with dark green streak and a train. He came with a purple
engineer's hat
and a yellow bandana. He has yellow eyes.
His U. K. name is Tracks. Note:
It is very common for his hair to fade to white, it's actually difficult to find
a version with pink hair.

Tex is yellow with dark pink hair with dark blue streak and cactus
symbol. There are two green cacti with two small pink cactus
flowers. He has dark periwinkle
eyes. He came with a green cowboy hat and blue bandana.

Flutter Ponies
(Second Edition)
Click

The Flutter Ponies were a special kind of pony
only
produced in two editions and a few special sets like the Slumber Party Pack.
They had small, slender bodies with shiny, thin wings which were prone to break.
The wings were not well constructed and broke very easily between the small
space of the wing and the tab (pictured right is a close up of a repro flutter
wing). Pictured below is the two wing holders and the center button that
was pressed to make them flutter. They also have a small design
on their cheek or forehead.
Many flutter ponies (even second editions) have variations; I
wouldn't say that one is harder to find than another. It's just a fluky
thing that Hasbro did. The variation
ponies have slightly larger eyes and flutters in Rosedust's pose had a miniscule
difference in the molding of the plastic.
These were sold in the U. K. and in Europe. There are also Spanish versions of Flutter Ponies.
Listing of all Flutter Ponies made:
First Edition: Rosedust, Lily, Morning Glory, Forget-Me-Not, Peach Blossom, Honeysuckle. Second Edition: Tropical Breeze, Wingsong, Wind Drifter, Cloud Puff. Party Pack: Yum Yum. Slumber Party Pack: Pink Dreams. Mail Order: Hollywood.
All Flutter Ponies originally have curly hair, the mane is strung in a large curl and so is the tail. It is common for them to loose this curl over time. It is also very common to find them without wings.
These were very much like the flutters from Year
4,
except for a few
bold color mov
es. The durability of the wings was never improved.
These ponies also had a tiny symbol on their cheek or face (close up example
pictured right). They are harder to find than the issues from Year
4.
Thanks to Melissa for use of these lovely
photographs of the Flutter Ponies, please visit her site at the Royal
Fortress. Wings pictured are not original.
Cloud Puff is purple with aqua hair and a white cloud blowing wind (cloud
outlined in aqua). She has a
blue gust of wind on her right cheek. Also note
the aqua color of Cloud Puffs hair, pictured below, it looks green on the
insert. She has green eyes.

Tropical Breeze is blue with bright red hair and has a pink flamingo.
She
has a pink flamingo on her
forehead. The flamingo on her forehead stands straight, with no leg bent.
She has purple eyes.
![]()

Wind Drifter is yellow with green hair and has an aqua and pink windmill.
She has a windmill symbol (same as pictured below) on her forehead.
She has purple eyes.
![]()
Wing Song is pink with blue hair and has a pink wind chime with hanging hearts.
She has a pink heart under her left eye, her cheek symbol is relatively small.
She has blue eyes.

Rosedust and Lily came back from Year 4.

The Newborn Twins came packaged with twin ponies and
accessories, each pony is smaller than the standard size Baby
Ponies. Some twins were identical (with only a slight pose difference,
like Milkweed and Tumbleweed) and some were fraternal (coming is different
colors, like Doodles and Noodles). Each had the same symbol. These
came in various issues: mail order, special packs, and even a second
edition of Newborn Twins. If you need specifics on color, I highly
suggest visiting the MIP Newborn Pony section to see them up close (click the
hyperlink below Newborn Ponies).

pink with golden hair and an golden swan (with a blue bill and ribbon around

Doodles and Noodles (earth ponies) have pink and blue "ABC" symbols. Doodles is a girl and is all pink.
She has a lighter pink body and darker pink hair. Noodles is a boy and is all
blue (light blue body with darker blue hair). Even though he is advertised
as a boy pony, he is in the same mold as a girl pony. This is the only
case like this in the U. S. listing of ponies.
![]()
Jangles and Tangles (earth ponies) have Humpty Dumpty (big white egg
with
purple pants) symbols. They are light aqua in color. Jangles has yellow hair, and Tangles

The first edition Princess ponies were the beginning of
a long line of royalty. There are two editions of Princess Ponies. These Princess Ponies came with
Bushwoolies and
damsel hats. A Bushwoolie was a furry creature that first
made an appearance in My
Little Pony: The Movie. Each Princess Pony came with one. To see
photographs of individual Bushwoolies, click
here.
They have special symbols molded in metal
with a jewel center.
These came in various designs: teardrops, butterflies, diamonds, etc.
Spotting the difference in an Edition 1 and Edition 2 Princess Pony:
First Editions came with Bushwoolies, Second Editions didn't.
First Editions had tinsel in their hair, but Second Editions had tinsel and a forelock of tinsel on the forehead.
First Editions had less extreme colors (in most cases) when compared to the oddly colored Second Editions.
