My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-O)
Year 6 (1987)

Year six was a grand year of second edition ponies. The Twice as Fancy Ponies came back with more innovative symbols, including Munchy's Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and Pickles. Three new Big Brothers were released much like those previous, no radical differences. The new Princess Ponies come out with more radical colors and tinsel forelocks. Also there is a new edition of Newborn Twins.
Not all ponies were second editions though, Year six is the year of issue for the well beloved Summerwing Ponies. Much more sturdy than flutters and with bright butterfly wings, these ponies were an instant success. Also Hasbro came up with the idea of Pony Friends, new animal friends for all the ponies in Ponyland.
This year is also the beginning of many new ponies up on the high end of 1980's technology. Brush 'n Grow (hair really grows), Peek-a-Boo (head really moves), Sweetberry (smells sweet), Sundae Best (smells sweet), Watercolor Baby Sea Ponies (change color), Magic Message (symbols reveal a special hidden symbol underneath), and Happy Tails Ponies (tails swirl and twirl) all have unique abilities that set them apart from Year 5 Ponies. These "do something" ponies will become the norm for years to come.
Also Mummy Charms were sold with specially marked packages. Each tiny charm came in different colors and with different symbols, just like actual ponies.
Related 1987 Ponies: Mail Order, Clipper.
Baby Pony Friends (or Pony Friends)

The Pony Friends are unique in that they were not ponies; this is the
second edition with four totally new friends (two return from the previous
year). These
babies first came in the
forms of a giraffe, lion, camel, and a zebra. The second edition below
came with a llama, dinosaur, elephant, and a moose. Each had its own
style, hair cut, colors, and symbols. Kingsley (lion) and Creamsicle (giraffe)
returned from
Year 5.
Related ponies: The Baby Ponies and Pretty Pals included four baby animals also. A lamb, calf, panda, and kangaroo. These differ in packaging because they come with both a pony and a pal. The Pretty Pals are also babies.
These Pony Friends were not sold in the U. K.
Cha Cha (llama) is sea foam green with
pink hair
(mane and tail) and pink bon bon
shaped symbols. I have heard Cha Cha's symbol called an array of different
things, but I believe they are hats. They look like the hats worn by Cha
Cha dancers. She has blue
eyes. There is a mail order llama related to the My Little Pony line named Rama Llama.

Cutesaurus (dinosaur) is orange with a chartreuse mane and forelock with blue
bones for her symbol. She has blue eyes. Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck
for use of this photograph.

Edgar (elephant) is purple with orange hair (mane and tail) with blue peanuts as his symbol.
He has green eyes. He also has molded toes.

Oakly (moose) is pinkish lavender with aqua hair (mane and tail) and blue
oak leaves. He has pink eyes and a forelock. He also has molded
cloven hooves. Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of this photograph.

Big Brother Ponies (all earth ponies) (Second Edition)
Big Brother Ponies brought some handsome boy ponies to the
herd. They
are larger than
the adult females and all in the same pose: bodies forward, all four feet equal
and straight (some have one hoof slightly tilted). They had special, distinguishable hooves, each with molded,
feathered feet (close up pictured right). All adult males sold in the U.
S. have this feature. Some have curly hair and some have straight
hair, but all have a different color stripe in the mane. All Big Brothers
and male ponies are earth
ponies.
This is the second edition of Big Brother Ponies; the first set had six in the original sets. Tex, Steamer, and Salty, returned from Year 5 and was sold with this set.
Related Ponies: The coveted Mountain Boy Ponies were sold in Europe and the U. K. Loving Family Ponies (U. S. and U. K.) and Family Friends and Family Babies all have male ponies in the same pose as the Big Brother Ponies. Also, Coat 'n Tails shares the same mold, being the only Mail Order with a male pony mold.
Barnacle is blue with bright orange hair
with
a yellow streak in his mane. He came with a
black pirate's hat, orange bandana, and has a
red and yellow treasure chest symbol. He has lavender eyes and curly hair.

streak in his mane and a blue tail. He has a red fire
helmet, yellow bandana, and a yellow and red hose and ladder symbol. He

Brush 'n Grow Ponies (tails grow longer when brushed)
Click here to see the Brush 'n Grow Ponies mint in the original packages!
The Brush 'n Grow Ponies have tons of hair. They
have extremely long full manes and full tails with beautiful rainbow colors. Each tail
could be extended
and then pulled back into the body and extended again. There is a winding
mechanism in the body of the pony that is activated by moving the head back and
forth; this is how the tall gets shorter and longer. This mechanism makes
a sort of clicking sound when operating. The head moves completely, but
the neck doesn't look terribly unlike the regular neck joint of a pony.
When it is tilted at an odd angle it is easier to note.
Each Brush and Grow Pony has its own unique set of hair colors. Each has four main colors in both the mane and tail. They have no forelock.
The Brush 'n Grows were one of a kind; however, Princess Brush 'n Grow Ponies came out the following year. They differ from the Brush 'n Grow Ponies by a jewel in their foreheads and their royal status. They too, have tons of hair like the Brush 'n Grow Ponies. The only other pony that has as much hair is Rapunzel, a special Mail Order that is very uncommon.
These were sold in the U. K.

Click here to see the Magic Message Ponies mint in the original packages!
Magic Message Ponies were very special ponies who had changing symbols. With cold/heat activation, the symbols change from normal (cold) to fading with a special symbol underneath (when heat is applied). Each magic message pony also has a cheek symbol on the right side of their bodies. Another odd thing about the Magic Message Ponies is each has a colored streak in their manes, before mostly only unicorns have this feature.
After time, some of the Magic Message Ponies symbols change permanently. They fade as though they have been heated and remain this way. Also, sometimes the thin film covering the symbol (that causes the symbols to appear to change) with peel partially off.
The only other ponies to be offered with change-able symbols were the Surprise Newborn Ponies. They had diapers that disappeared to reveal their symbols.

Mummy Charms (or Mommy Charms)
Click here to see an example of a Mummy Charm mint in the original package!
Both of the terms Mummy and Mommy charms are acceptable. Hasbro used both terms. Why, I'm not exactly sure. The charm mold was first used with the Charmkin's line, a special charm. Later little bookmarks featuring the six original ponies were sold at McDonald's. Also, a special charm named Powder Puff was released with the first Fan Club. There is also a charm that comes with Sweet Scoops, a rare mail order pony.
The Mommy Charms were available in select
packages with ponies. I have included them both in the pony and
accessories list. A special
bracelet was also available by Mail Order, it was specifically for the Mummy
Charms. The Mummy Charms are also listed under U. S. Accessories and
Playsets.
