My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-L)
Year 7 (1988)

Year 7 was Hasbro busiest year for the actual My Little Pony line (disregarding subsequent lines like Dream Beauties etc.). It was a totally innovative year for Hasbro, nearly every set this year was a totally new idea. A nice lot of baby ponies are issued this year, including a full set of adorable Baby Brother Ponies. Summer Wing Ponies became Windy Wing Ponies and find their place among collector's favorites. Also new adult lines sport a unique flare distinct to each group of ponies, Perfume Puffs have enormously puffy hair, Sparkle Ponies have sparkle filled bodies that glisten from head to toe, Merry Go Round ponies are beautiful intricately designed carousel ponies, and Candy Cane Ponies are Sweet Smelling Ponies with huge bouncing curls. Also this year brought the family sets of ponies, Loving Family Ponies, which came in sets of three: Mommy, Daddy, and Baby. This is also the third and last issue of U. S. Megan and Sundance. Megan gets an altogether new look; much like a Hasbro Moondreamer.
This will be the last "traditional" year for Hasbro, after this year you will see them experiment with various ideas that vary from the norm of the My Little Ponies line. The years that follow include Dream Beauties, Petites, and My Little Puppy, Kitty and Bunny. Also, set numbers will change from the traditional six.
Related 1988 Ponies: Mail Order, Valentine Twin Ponies, Pretty Mane Scribbles and Dabble.
Baby Fancy Pants Ponies (painted on diaper)
Baby Fancy Ponies are unique because
they have
diapers that were
painted onto their bodies; all diapers are white but have various designs.
Each also came with a special mesh neck tie (pictured right is Baby Splashes
neck tie) and various other accessories.
There are one Pegasus, one unicorn, and four earth ponies. The earth ponies came in two poses Baby Blossom's pose (no freckles) and Baby Tic Tac Toe's pose (each having a first tooth). Some also have a different colored forelock. The U. S. versions have Made in Thailand stamped in the hoof. To my knowledge these are the only U. S. ponies to ever be made in Thailand.
These were sold in the U. K., but
differ from the U. S. version. In the U. K. they are called
Playtime Baby Ponies (I believe this is the English translation). The Italian
versions are called L'allegro Baby Ponies. Only four of the six are
sold in the U. K., Baby Dot's 'n Hearts, Baby Splashes, Baby
Starburst, and Baby Glider; Baby Bows and Baby Sunnybunch were not sold in the
U. K. These versions came with some of the Playtime
Baby Brother Ponies (but are all sold together); included are Baby Paws,
Baby Drummer and Baby Countdown. Note the card to the right picturing a
Baby Brother with Baby Starburst. These ponies have Made in China marked
onto the hooves (unlike the U. S. versions with Made in Thailand). Baby
Splashes and Baby Starburst are also variants.
Baby Bows (earth pony) is blue with curly pink hair; she has a white diaper with
yellow and pink bows, and a purple bow around her neck. She is in Baby
Blossom's pose and has purple eyes. Thanks to Melissa for use of this

Fortress.

Baby Dots 'n Hearts (Pegasus) is pale lavender with aqua hair with white
streak as the forelock. She has a white diaper with pink heart shaped flowers
and aqua green stems and also pink dots as her symbol, a first
tooth, and wears
a lavender bow. She is standing in Baby Bouncy's pose and has aqua
eyes. Thanks to Joanne for use of this photograph.

Baby Glider (unicorn) is purple with white hair with a chartreuse streak
as her
forelock. She has a white diaper with pink and green butterflies on her diaper and came with a dark pink bow.
She is in Baby Glory's pose and has yellow eyes. Thanks to Joanne for
use of this photograph.

diaper and came with a green bow, and she has a first tooth. She has an
international alternate with pink hair and a forelock. The U.
K. variant version has pink hair (instead of purple) and a blue forelock.

Baby Starburst (earth pony) is dark pink with blue hair. She has blue
and moons stars and
yellow and blue moons on her diaper and wears a yellow bow. She has purple
eyes and stands in Baby Blossom's pose. The U.
K. variant version has pink eyes, a yellow forelock, and pink and blue stars
and moons.

There is a pony and a pretty pal in each set of these issues. The pair came with similar colors and similar or identical symbols. The pretty pals are also supposedly babies: lamb (baby sheep), calf (baby cow), kangaroo, and a panda. The pals aren't much larger than a baby pony and each has comb-able hair.
Similar sets include: Pony Friends (edition 1) and the Pony Friends (edition 2). They are similar to the Pretty Pals because they are animals (specifically not ponies) and they are also babies.
These ponies were not sold in the U. K.,
at least I don't have any records showing their release their.
Perhaps because of the infamous Pony Friends which were supposed to be released in the U. K. but never were. The only
theory I have is perhaps that was the U. K. alternate line and for some reason
it was never released. through. I'm only guessing though. Of course
the regular Pony Friends line wasn't release in the U. K., that could have also
been an alternate line. The line was sold in Germany.
Baby Fleecy (earth pony) is lavender with pink hair and Baby Woolly is
a pink lamb with purple hair. They both have two balls of yarn as their
symbol (both aqua green and blue). They have aqua eyes and Baby Fleecy is
standing in Baby Ember's pose. They
came with an aqua and yellow wagon, stack toy, purple bottle, aqua teddy bear
brush, lavender duck comb, blue ribbons.

Baby Lucky Leaf (unicorn) is yellow with golden hair and Baby Leafy is an
orange calf with yellow hair. They both have clover flowers and leaves as their symbol.
They both have blue eyes and Baby Lucky Leaf is standing in Baby Glory's pose.
They came with a pink and yellow sandbox, blue dish, pink and yellow spoons,
green bottle, pink teddy brush, duck comb, pink ribbons.

Baby Pockets (Pegasus) is aqua green with pink hair and Baby Hoppy is a pink
kangaroo with aqua hair. They both have filled pockets as their
symbol; Baby Pocket's symbols are pictured right. They have pink eyes and
Baby Pockets is standing in Baby Firefly's pose.
They came with an orange and pink wagon, stack toy, pink bottle, green teddy
bear brush, blue duck comb, green ribbons.

Baby Stripes (earth pony) is blue with white hair and Baby Nectar is a blue
and
white
panda with white hair. They have two bees (pink bodies, yellow wings and heads).
as their symbol. Baby Stripes is standing in Baby Blossom's pose and both
in the set have dark purple eyes. They came with a
purple and yellow sandbox, yellow dish, blue and pink spoons, blue bottle,
purple bear brush, yellow duck comb, yellow ribbons.

Candy Cane Ponies (ringlet curls and a sweet smell)
Click here to see the Candy Cane Ponies mint in the original packages!
Candy Cane Ponies have hair that is curled in
double colored
ringlets. Pictured
right is an example (Sugar
Sweet's hair); this is an example of how the original curl should look. Many have lost the curling in their hair, due to
playwear. Each also has a delicious scent. There was one unicorn,
Pegasus, and four earth ponies.
These ponies are the only ponies to have bi-colored twisting curls. The Rainbow Curl Ponies do have the same type bouncing ringlet curls, but they are solidly colored (within each separate curl). Some have forelocks and some do not. Sugar Sweet has the same odd hairline that Majesty has. It seems further back than most hairlines. These ponies are also similar to the Sweetberry Ponies and the Sundae Best Ponies all having a sweet smell. Each ponies symbol relates to something sweet and the symbol is flat.
These ponies were sold in the U. K., except for Lemon Treats and Mint Dreams. Thanks to Joanne for use of the group photograph below.

Dance 'n Prance Ponies (knob on chest)
Click here to see the Dance 'n Prance Ponies mint in the original packages!
Dance 'n Prance ponies really dance!
Each
Dance 'n Prance pony
has a flower shaped knob on her chest; when the knob is
turned the pony dances (close up pictured right) by rapid twisting of the
tail. The tail is thinner than most ponies and originally has a
clear plastic piece enclosing the tail near the top (to prevent tangling). Happy
Tails Ponies also have a tail ring, because they have tails that also twist.
Each pony also stand in an
upright pose with the head held upward (even unicorns). They basically
share the same pose, which is unique to only Dance 'n Prance ponies. The
unicorn pose is basically the same pose as Powder.
The pose is key to the balance of these ponies.
Please also note the tail ring, symbol, and knob are the same colors.
Other Dance related ponies: Sweetsteps Ballerina Ponies have molded ballet slippers and leotards, Baby Ballerina Ponies are the baby versions of the Sweetstep Ballerina Ponies, Baby Halfnote and the Baby Bonnet School of Dance where all the ponies go to dance.

Loving Family Ponies (all are earth ponies)
Click here to see the Loving Family Ponies mint in the original packages!
Loving Family Ponies was a brilliant idea of combining Mommy, Daddy, and Baby all in one package! In the U. S. all ponies came packaged together with two combs and three tail ribbons. Loving Family Ponies are all earth ponies with twice as fancy symbols covering their entire bodies. All have the same body color and eye color. However, Mommy has one color mane and tail, Daddy has a different color mane, and tail and the baby is a mixture of the two. The symbols are also arrayed in the same manner.
The Daddies all share the same pose as the Big Brother Ponies (as you may hear them often called by mistake). The Mommies and female Babies, however, all have different poses. The male Babies (brothers) all share the same pose as Clipper or Lucky. Lucky was the first pony issued with the pose in Year 4 as a mail order pony.
Think of the Loving Family Ponies in two sets, those sold in the U. S. and those sold in the U. K. and in Europe. Loving Family Pony Sets sold Internationally vary from those sold in U. S. There is an extra sibling for each family. International families were sold separately, unlike U. S. families which were sold together.
The Apple Delight family all have white bodies and lavender eyes. The UK versions came packaged
individually and there is a special Apple Delight pony not sold in the U. S.
that was sold there. Baby Apple Delight (brother) was also sold; click
here to see the complete set sold in the U. K.
Thanks to Joanne for use of this photograph.

curly.
Baby Apple Delight (girl) has bright yellow hair with a pink streak

(with yellow dots speckled around her body). She is in Ember's pose.
Also her hair is longer than most standard babies and is originally curly.
The Bright Bouquet family is pale purple and have blue eyes
(shades of blue may vary). The UK versions came packaged individually

Thanks to Joanne for use of this photograph.

dots.
