My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-O)
Year 8 (1989)

Year 8 seemed to slow down from the bustle of Year 7.  There were only about ten sets sold in Year 8, verses Year 7's sixteen sets.  Hasbro was focusing on other lines as well as the My Little Pony line.  Year 8 was the first year that the Petite My Little Ponies would be issued; also this is the year that Dream Beauties were issued.  Many sets from Year 8 would bear a striking resemblance to ponies in the past or ponies that would come from sets in the future.

The Pony Bride will have a near replica to herself come out in year 10, Prom Queen and Glittery Sweetheart Sisters are continuations of the original Sweetheart Sister Ponies, Baby Sparkle Ponies were based on the same principle as adult Sparkle Ponies, the Christmas Pony Merry Treats wasn't the first Christmas Pony and the Sweetsteps Ballerinas would have babies fashioned after them the following year.  The Drink 'n Wet line was unique, featuring ponies that could drink real water from a bottle and wet from a hole in the back.  Also, the Tropical Ponies and Rainbow Curl Ponies are unique; still there were similar sets to these.

You will note that this year there would be a shift in the traditional sets.  Many sets from Year 7 and before had a set of six ponies.  Now there would only be four in most of these set up until Year 10 (most of these were in sets of three).

Related 1989 Ponies:  Accessory Playsets, Baby Princess Sparkle (Baby Buggy; second edition).  Mail Order, Christmas Baby Pony, Goldilocks, Playset Ponies, Sweet Scoops (with charm), Twice As Fancy Baby Ponies.

Baby Sparkle Ponies (glitter-filled bodies)

These are the babies with the same bodies as their adult counterparts, the Sparkle Ponies from Year 7.  The babies had name corresponding to earlier Baby Ponies (but no resemblance) except for Baby Starflower which had a new unique name.  There is an adult Starflower, but she bears little similarity to the baby form but they do share star symbols.  Baby Firefly, North Star and Gusty bear no resemblance to the baby ponies that have previously been issued with their names.  There are two earth ponies, a unicorn and a Pegasus.

Each Baby Sparkle Pony has a glitter filled body, solid color hair and painted on symbols that related to the sky.  These ponies were not sold in the U. K. but there is also an International group that are alternates to the Baby Sparkle Ponies.  They are called the Starlight Baby Ponies.  The Starlight Babies have different names and body types and colors but both sets share the same symbols.

Other similar groups include the Glow 'n Show Ponies (issued in Year 9) which have heart and star filled bodies instead of glitter.

Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of the group photograph.

Baby Firefly
(Pegasus) is dark purple with yellow orange hair, and her symbol is a blue and orange kite.  She has green eyes.  She comes in original Baby Pony Baby Firefly's pose.  The first Baby Firefly was one of the Baby Ponies (first edition). The only similarity is that they are both Pegasus.

Baby Gusty (unicorn) is yellow and has dark pink hair, and her symbol is a pink and blue hot air balloon with rings and stars. She has pink eyes. She is in Baby Glory's pose.  The first Baby Gusty was a Beddy Bye-Eye Pony in the U. S.   The only similarity that they share is that they are both unicorns. There is also a Non Beddy Bye Eyed version; there is a link to her from information of the U. S. version.

Baby North Star (earth pony) is orange with pink hair and her symbol is blue and pink ringed planets and stars.  Hair is prone to fading white.  She has sky blue eyes.  She is in Baby Blossom's pose.  The first Baby North Star was a First Tooth Baby Pony.

Baby Starflower (earth pony) is pink with yellow hair, and her symbol is a blue star with purple rings and stars.   She has blue eyes.  She is in Baby Ember's pose.

Christmas Pony:  Merry Treat

Merry Treat was a colorful holiday addition to the My Little Pony family.  She was sold in stores at Christmas time and decorated in the traditional U. S. "Christmas colors", red and green.   She has long hair (reaching past the hooves) and has no forelock.  Her hair is in two colors red and green, but the mane is striated in four colors: red, green, red, green (close up example pictured right; thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for this picture).  Her symbol also based on a the myth of Saint Nicholas.  The "traditional" story that Santa Clause (Saint Nicholas) wears a red suit and cap, has a white beard, and is rather rotund (round).  She is one of few specialty ponies that were sold in stores as an individual pony without a group of other ponies; her packaging read Christmas Pony.  She was also

Merry Treat is not the only Christmas related pony to be issued.  However, she is the only U. S. store version to be issued.  The other two versions are mail orders:  Baby Stockings and Stockings.

Merry Treat  (earth pony)  is white with red and green hair with Santa Clause (holding a candy cane) and green holly leaves as her symbol.  She is in Posey's pose and has light green eyes.   She has 1984, China stamped onto her hooves.

She came with a comb shaped like a Christmas Tree and a yellow ribbon.  These were the only two accessories that she came with; for photos of these see the Mint in Package guide.

Drink 'n Wet Baby Ponies

Drink 'n Wet Ponies are unique babies that can drink from a bottle anddrinkwetdiaper.jpg (7403 bytes) wet their diapers.  Each pony has a hole in the mouth and a hole in the posterior area.  The little bottle accessories could be filled with water; each also came with a special solid colored diaper or nappy.  A close up of the diaper is pictured right; each pony came with a blue and purple one.
Pictured left is a close up of the mouth (which is open and hollow, leading to the tummy)

Pictured left if the hole on the posterior end (which is located about 1/4th to 1/8th of an inch from the tail).

There are three earth ponies and one unicorn.  The poses that each pony has is unique only to Drink 'n Wet Baby Ponies; they have to be different from the standard poses to help the drinking and wetting process.  These ponies were sold in the U. K.  Baby Cuddles and Baby Snookums have alternate names.  Perhaps the name were changed because they were repetitive of earlier ponies.  The first Baby Cuddles issued came with the Baby Buggy.  The first Baby Snookums issued was a Newborn Twin.

Each pony came with several accessories that only came with the Drink 'n Wet Baby Ponies.  Accessories include:  changing table, special bottle, purple and blue diaper, diaper box,  duck comb and ribbon.  To see individual accessories, please see the Mint in Package Guide.

Pictured left to right:  Top: Baby Flicker and Baby Cuddles.  Bottom:  Baby Snookums and Baby Rainfeather.  Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of the above photograph.

Baby Cuddles
(earth pony) is white with yellow hair and has a pink watering can and pink flower as her symbol (the water, flower stem, and a smiley face inside the flower center is aqua green). She has bright purple pink eyes.   Her UK name is Baby Rainflower.  Thanks to Inglemist for the close up symbol shot of Baby Cuddles.

Baby Flicker (earth pony) is yellow with dark pink hair and her symbol is a pink fish in a pink fish bowl (with blue water highlights). She has blue eyes.  She stands with all four hooves flat.

Baby Snookums ( unicorn) is purple with pink hair and has yellow rain hat and rain boots as her symbol.  She has pale aqua blue eyes.  Her name is Baby Wellyboot.

Baby Rainfeather (earth pony) is pink with blue hair and her symbol is a blue duckling with an yellow umbrella. She has blue eyes.  Her head is tilted upward and she has three hooves flat with the left front hoof tilted back.

These babies are characterized by the holes in their open mouths and in the rear.  They came with boxed diapers that were purple and read magic diapers.

Glittery Sweetheart Sister Ponies (slender bodies, glittery symbols)

Glittery Sweetheart Sister Ponies have glittery symbols covering their entire bodies, like Twice As Fancy Ponies.  They are in the traditional Sweetheart Sister mold; which they share with several other sets.  Each of these ponies have an earring in the ear and this was the last year for Sweetheart Sisters.  There is another set of Sweetheart Sisters issued in Year 8; the Prom Queen Sweetheart Sisters.  The following year Pretty Pony molds would replace them, which are basically the same but lack the earring.

They have standard Sweetheart Sister features:  a single flower earring, eye shadow on upper eyelids, long mane and tail, and three traditional poses: walking, strutting, and standing.  Each has a slender body and slender nose; they are the teenagers in Ponyland.  In addition Glittery Sweetheart Sisters have tinsel in the name and tail.  These are the only Sweetheart Sisters to have glittery symbols.  There are other ponies with glittery symbols, like the Rainbow Ponies.

For some reason the names on these ponies don't really match up with their symbols, which causes some confusion.  Bright Night has bows (not stars), Star Flash has hearts (not stars), Sunblossom has stars (not suns) and Twinkler has suns (not stars; though the sun is technically a star, I am referring to a five sided star).  These ponies were sold in the U. K.  Twinkler's U. K. name is Moonshimmer which really doesn't match up with her sun shaped symbols either.
