My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (A-O)
Year 9 (1990)

Year 9 was a busy year for the My Little Pony line; many new special sets will make it an interesting year. Glow 'n Show ponies are unique ponies that have clear bodies filled with hearts and stars, Secret Surprise Ponies are large ponies with a special compartment and key, Precious Pocket Ponies have 3-d symbols, Rockin' Beat Ponies have that post 80's music flare, Pretty Princess Ponies are your standard fairy tail type toy, and Teeny Tiny Ponies are the smallest ponies produced. It was a year for innovation, but there were a few sets that resembled ponies from past years: Baby Ballerina Ponies (instead of adults), Baby Rainbow Ponies (instead of adults), and Pretty Ponies, which were basically Sweetheart Sister Ponies.
Other specialty sets were issued: the Chuck E. Cheese Baby Pony were being sold in Chuck E. Cheese pizza chains. A new Firefly was issued with a special tape set from the 1984, Firefly's Adventure. Also, Hasbro was busy producing Petite Ponies and My Little Puppy, Kitty and Bunny.
Related 1990 Ponies: Mail Order, Baby Gametime, Baby Sugarcake, Baby Pearlized Ponies, Li'l Sweetcake, Li'l Cupcake, Mommy and Baby Pony, Rapunzel.

Baby Ballerina Ponies have molded bodies, molded slippers, and little bows on
their shoes and one under their necks (bows under the neck and shoes are the
same color). They were similar to the adult
Sweetstep Ballerina Ponies; the adults are similar to the babies, except
they have an intricate symbol on their backs. Other dance related ponies
include: Baby
Halfnote and the Baby Bonnet School of Dance and Dance
'n Prance Ponies.
Baby Ballerina Ponies have no symbols and are all earth ponies. Pictured right is an example of the molded leotard and the molded ballet shoes. Each leg is moveable.
Each Baby Ballerina has four movable legs and neck,
molded leotard, molded ballet shoes, and a long mane and tail.

The first adult Rainbow Ponies came out in Year three, but it wasn't until Year 9 that the first and last Baby Rainbow Ponies are released. Only four were released and each has rainbow hair, but each pony has different colors. Each pony has three colors in the mane and tail and each has a rainbow related symbol; also each has a forelock. They are an odd bunch altogether, ranging from pale aqua and coral colors to pink and other colors.
Other rainbow related ponies that were released: Rainbow Ponies (edition 1), Rainbow Ponies (edition 2), and Rainbow Curl Ponies.
These were released in the U. K. as Rainbow Baby Ponies.
Baby Brightbow (Pegasus) is pink with
blue, yellow, pale
purple hair and has a blue
crescent moon with a hanging rainbow. She
has blue eyes. She
in Baby Firefly's pose.

Baby Rainribbon (unicorn) is purple with pink, yellow, blue hair and has
a rainbow, yellow sun, pink cloud, and rain. She has blue eyes. She is in Baby Glory's pose.

Baby Starbow (earth pony) is white with pink, yellow, blue hair and has
is a rainbow with multi-colored stars. She has blue eyes. She is in Baby Blossom's pose.

Baby Sunribbon (earth pony) is pale aqua with coral, chartreuse, blue hair and has
a rainbow on top of a pink cloud with stars surrounding it.
She has coral eyes. She's in
Ember's pose.

Chuck E. Cheese Baby Pony
Chuck E. Cheese Baby Pony (earth pony) is dark pink with long purple
(has a
blue tint) hair and has and the Chuck E. Cheese logo and mouse mascot symbol
outlined in white. She shares the same pose as Ember and has a longer
mane and tail (compared to most other baby ponies); it's about 3/4 inch to 1
inch past her hooves. Her eyes are a strange sea foam green color.
She has no formal name.

She was available at Chuck E. Cheese (now called Show Biz Pizza) restaurants for a limited time; she was not sold in stores. Chuck E. Cheese restaurants mostly sold pizza items, had a playroom for kids, and the mouse mascot (seen above, right). She could be purchased or won by turning in x amount of tickets. You received tickets by playing games and winning. She was only available in the U. S.; she was never sold in the U. K.
Firefly and "Firefly's Adventure"

Firefly (Pegasus) is pink with blue hair and has two blue
lightening bolts. She varies from the first Firefly
made in 1983 by her pose and
symbols and color. Firefly's pose in '83 had the leg lifted slightly pony
facing forward, and she had an open mouth. Also, the '83 had glittery
lightening bolts instead of painted on symbol. There is also a slight
differentiation in colors; the new version has brighter, more brilliant colors.
"Firefly's Adventure" was first released in 1984 as a special on television in two parts. It was simply referred to as "My Little Pony" at that time. It later came to be called "Firefly's Adventure" or "Rescue at Midnight Castle." It was re-released with the pony and sold as a set. To find out more about "Firefly's Adventure", click here (for synopsis, information, characters and song list).
The set came together, packaged as shown right. Firefly and the tape came together.
Glow 'n Show Ponies (translucent bodies filled with hearts and stars that glow in the dark)
Glow 'n Show Ponies were another new set with an
altogether different
theme from any other ponies. The Glow 'n Show Ponies actually glow in the
dark. When exposed to light for a period of time, the flecks of hearts and
stars embedded into their bodies will glow in the dark. Each ponies body
is a different hue or color, but is translucent. You can see through the
actual body. There are only two versions of bodies: the
original four Glow 'n Show ponies have white stars and pink hearts in the
body. The second release of Dazzleglow has white stars and blue hearts in
the body. So there are a total of five in the set (though the second
version of Dazzleglow was probably released at some other time).
Each pony has two different colors in the mane, but in four sections. For example, Dazzleglow has a pink and blue mane; her mane is pink, blue, pink, blue. The tail of the pony also has two colors.
Thanks to Baby Hula Hula for use of the group photograph below.

The only ponies that the Glow 'n Show ponies are even remotely similar to are the Sparkle Ponies (Year 7) which have glitter filled bodies (do not glow in the dark). The U. K. versions of the Glow 'n Show Ponies are called Glowing Magic Ponies.
Bright Glow (earth pony) is
orange with
dark pink and purple hair and has
two white birds touching beaks. She has blue eyes. She has blue eyes and is standing in Up,
Up, and Away's pose.
Dazzle Glow (version 1) (unicorn) is
purple
pink with pink and blue hair and has three
yellow umbrellas. She has lavender eyes and is standing in Gusty's
pose. She also has the standard white stars and pink hearts in the
body.

Happy Glow (earth pony) is pink (could be mistaken for orange or be
called orange) with blue and
white hair, and three blue clown hats. She has periwinkle eyes and is standing
in Cupcake's pose.
Star Glow (Pegasus) is blue with yellow
and pink hair and an orange piano
and candelabra. She is standing in Dancing Butterflies pose.
Dazzleglow (second version) (unicorn) is lavender or pink with blue and pink
hair. She has yellow umbrella symbols. She
has lavender eyes and is standing in Gusty's pose.
She has white stars and blue hearts in
the body, unlike the first version with pink hair.
There had been quite a debate on this pony's origins.
She is, in fact, a U. S. pony. She came with a card in the same manner as
the first. The most probably, and only conclusion, that can be drawn about
her origins is that she was released after the other. Probably in the
subsequent year.
Why all the confusion? The blue hearted version of
Dazzleglow is seen in International back cards and comics, so one would assume
that she was from abroad. However, she was sold in the U. S.
