1980's International My Little Ponies
Alternate Ponies--Symbol only

There are also various Argentinean
and Brazilian
or Greek ponies
that may look like alternate ponies. Please also check these sections if
you can't find what you are looking for here.
Internationally, there were
many ponies made that very slightly different than their American counterparts.
Symbol variation is the most common type of variation between the United States
and International versions. Baby Ponies (Germany)
These are Baby Ponies that have painted on symbols instead of glitter
like versions of the Baby Ponies sold in the U.
S. The ponies shown below can also be found
under the German
and Austrian section. Close up pictured right (thanks to Joanne for use of
this photograph).Baby Firefly (Pegasus) is pink with
blue hair and a blue
lightening bolt. The U. S. version has a glittery
symbol; also many International versions also have glittery symbols. Baby Moondancer (unicorn) is white with pink hair
and a
lavender streak. She has a pink moon and stars symbol. She
varies from the U. S. version in that her symbol is not glittery.
Baby Surprise (Pegasus) is
white with chartreuse
hair and a purple balloon. She varies from the U. S. version in that her
symbol isn't glittery.Baby Glory (unicorn) is white with purple hair and
a blue streak. She has a purple
shooting star symbol (painted on).Collector Ponies

purple stars. Freckles variations
Even though freckles aren't technically a symbol, they are a specific
body marking.
Seashell (Italian) (earth pony) is purple with green hair and green
seashells. She has freckles instead of a blaze on her nose, like the U.
S. version. She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on her hoof.

Bubbles (Italian) (earth pony) is yellow with blue
hair and green and blue bubbles. She has freckles instead of a blaze on
her nose, like the U. S.
version. She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on her hoof.
Sunlight (Italian) (earth pony) (rainbow pony) is
blue with rainbow hair and a silver sun and gold clouds (metallic). The U.
S. version does not have freckles and has a glittery symbol. She has
blue eyes and Italy stamped on her hoof.
Green Symbol PoniesOne thing I am certain about is that these ponies are all
Italian versions. There are many theories as to why these ponies have
green symbols. Ice Feather suggests that possibly that these ponies originally did have gold symbols,
but the gold paint rubbed off, and the stain that was left behind on the plastic
oxidized to green. I think that is the most solid theory and makes the
most sense. Could some of them actually be green, well, I don't
know. I see tons of them Mint on Card with green symbols, however ponies
are prone to fade even in the package.
Ponies that may have a green symbol: Sunlight (pictured
above), Starshine, Tickle, Sunbeam, and Pinwheel. Starshine (Italian) (Pegasus) is white with rainbow hair
and
a green sunburst symbol. She varies from the U. S. version in that her
symbol is non-glitter and green instead of yellow. She is one of several
International versions of Starshine. Many Italian ponies has symbols that would fade to green,
however, I still am not sure about Starshine and Sunbeam. I have never
seen one faded (sometimes you can tell the difference), just strictly green,
even the Mint on Card versions.Non-Happy Tails Ponies
These ponies are still of a mystery of sorts. They are in the same
molds and colors of the Happy
Tales ponies. However, these ponies are symbol less and their tails do
not swing. I have seem Tale Tales whom is often called
"Bobbi". Also, I have seen Squeezer. I have heard rumors
of others as well.
Posey (UK; Non-So Soft) (earth pony) is yellow with pink hair and dark
pink or magenta tulips. The U. S. version
has bright pink tulips; she is a Year
3 Earth Pony. She is also listed with the Non
So Soft Ponies.
The pale tulip version or white tulip version: I (personally) do not accept as a
variation. *thanks to Ice Feather for the suggestion*. I have seen
two U. S. cards with Posey, one with vibrant pink tulips and the other with pale
tulips (these are the same cards), and it looks like she has faded.
My Posey has bright pink tulips when I purchase her as a child and now they are
almost white. Majesty/Twilight hybrid For
more information, please click on the link.
Milkyway (unicorn) is purple with white hair
and white stars. She has three white stars on her right cheek. She is a first edition twice as fancy pony, and her
American version has silver glittery stars. She has purple eyes and is in
Mimic's pose. She is from the United
Kingdom and Germany.
Unicorns and Pegasus (Painted
on or metallic symbols)
A word about non-glitter symbol ponies,
the origin of these ponies can vary. They are not all from the same set in
one place. Sometimes there are ponies with the painted on symbols that are
from several places of origin. For example, there is a pink version of
Parasol with a painted on symbol, and a pale version (Italian) of Parasol with a
painted on symbol.
Non-glitter Unicorns and Pegasus also many of
the earlier Pegasus and Unicorns that had glittery symbols, were replaced with
non-glittery versions. These are listed in in Year
3 and Year 4. Most Year 3 and Year 4 Pegasus and Unicorns have an alternate
that is non-glittery, though I am not listing them all. Below are
several of the symbol thumbnails. Gusty can be seen in 1980's non-so soft
ponies.

(Italy) (unicorn) is pale blue with white hair with a yellow streak and a yellow sun.

Sunbeam (Italy version 2) is much the same as the one above but has a
distinctly green symbol. I am not sure if its due to fading or actually a
different pony. She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on the hoof.
Twilight (Italian) (unicorn) is pink with white
hair and a purple streak with purple stars symbols (painted on). I believe
she is a deep shade of pink but sometimes fades to a creamy pink color (pictured
right). There are other versions of Twilight: Italian
white Twilight with blue hair and Italian
Twilight in Moondancer's pose. She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on the
hoof.
Glory (Italian) (unicorn) is white with purple hair and a blue
streak. Her symbol is a silver shooting star with a purple trail (painted
on). She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on the hoof.
Medley (Italian) is green with green hair and dark green musical notes

Starshine (Italy) is white with a gold sun symbol. She has blue

(Italy; version 2?) is white with a green sun symbol. She has blue
eyes and Italy stamped on her hoof. Many Italians have fading symbols to
green. However, Starshine and Sunbeam are two Italians that I have seen
that show no evidence of fading. I'm not certain one way or the
other. Starshine (French) is white (chalky white) with a bright
yellow sun symbol. There are also two versions of German
Starshine.
SECOND EDITION RAINBOW PONIES; You
can see the Glittery Symbols U. S. ponies here.
Tickle
(Italian) (Pegasus) is purple with gold feathers. Her symbols are
smaller than the US version, quite a bit smaller. Sometimes her symbol can
turn an odd green color. Her body is also smaller than the US
version. She has Italy stamped on the hoof. Tickle (No Country) (place of origin has not yet been discovered) is purple (less purple than normal
Tickle) with an orange reddish color, metallic. She has blue eyes, instead
of US Tickles lavender eyes.
Flutterbye
(Italian) (Pegasus) is orange with purple butterflies (painted on).
They are pictured above, pretty close to the US version by symbol. The
same pattern is on her tush. She has blue eyes and Italy stamped on the
hoof. Flutterbye (German) is orange with orange butterflies (painted symbols that are spread further apart than and are
orange). She has Hong Kong on the hoof. Flutterbye (Spanish) is
pale orange with dark orange butterflies. She only has three butterflies
instead of four and they are distinctly a different shape. She has Spain
on the hoof.
Pinwheel

similar to the US version, with Hong Kong on the hoof. Sometimes her

Please click here to see other
Princess Pony variations (includes Variant Princess Tiffany [with golden hair],
plastic symbol variants, etc)..
Princess Ponies are available with many symbol variations; these are not
the only ones. You will often see international variations that are just
slightly different from the U. S. versions.
Princess Ponies with plastic symbols (all first edition) have international
alternates
that have very rare symbol differences. Instead of metal symbols, they
are plastic. They are also smaller and have large jewels (proportionally).
Princess
Royal Blue (earth pony) is blue with pink hair and purple tinsel and a
circular
jewel symbol (jewel missing). This is a very strange symbol
variation indeed. The regular Princess Royal Blue has a studded moon
symbol.
U. S. Version of
symbol. Most Princess variations are from the first set of
U. S. Princess Ponies (came with Bushwoolies).
Sea Ponies (Italian)
Even though eyes aren't technically a symbol, they are a specific
body marking.

Italian Sea Ponies have distinct eyes that distinguish them from regular Sea
Ponies. They have note-able eyes with thick lash lines. I'm not sure
how many were made. They seem to all have the blue Italian eye
characteristic. I believe the pony pictured below is also Italian
(but I have no idea who she is).
Twilight/Majesty hybrid (Italian) (unicorn)
is white with blue hair with blue stars symbol. She is in
the standard Twilight pose (some Italian version have a pose variation).
She came with the Italian Dream
Castle (which is basically the same as the U. S. version, except it came
with this beauty. She has Italy stamped on the hoof. The
U. S. version is pink with white hair. There is also an Italian
version with a pose variation, and an Italian
version with painted on symbols.
