My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (M-Z)
Year 3 (1984)

In 1984, Baby Ponies were born; they would become immensely popular and well loved by all My Little Pony Mommies.  Aside from Baby Ponies and the classic Megan and Sundance, many ponies from Year 3 were second sets.  The Rainbow Ponies, Unicorns and Pegasus, Earth Ponies, and Sea Ponies were all second releases.

About the new editions to the family:  Baby Sea Ponies and Baby Ponies were added in this year. Baby Ponies came with the most accessories ever sold (aside from playsets), they came with a bottle, diaper, and other accessories.   Baby Sea Ponies came with a special float (instead of a shell like adult Sea Ponies).

In 1984, Firefly's Adventure was released as a television special; My Little Pony had officially made it into television.  A very public figure on television, Megan was made into a doll and sold with Sundance.  The pair would always be sold together, and sold in several different releases.

Another baby pony named Ember would become part of the pony line as well.  She was sold as a Mail Order this year, as well as another version that came with a tape.

A foreword about Megan and Sundance:  Megan and Sundance were two of the most commonly remembered figures from the My Little Pony line.  Megan was a great friend to all the ponies in the television shows and the My Little Pony movie.  It only made sense to make her into a doll.  Sundance became her partner, instead of her regular television horse, T. J.

Megan
(earth girl) is blonde and has a pink and white frilly dress.  She has blue eyes.  She has long straight hair and bangs, and has a pink ribbon tying her hair in a ponytail.  She came with dress, ribbon, and shoes.  Notation:  There are two other American versions of Megan and Sundance.  The second edition was Megan and So Soft Sundance; Megan was slightly different and Sundance had flocking.  The third edition of Megan and Sundance was Twice as Fancy Megan and Sundance; both were decorated with Sundance's symbol all over.  There is also an International version of Megan which is basically the same as the first edition, with a dress exclusive only overseas.
Other related My Little Pony dolls:  Molly and the Pony Friends dolls that were never released.

Sundance (earth pony) is white with pink hair and a circular pattern of hearts and dots (close up of symbol pictured right).  She has blue eyes and originally has curly hair.
She came with a pink bridle.  Megan and Sundance were always sold together, all three versions.  They were also sold as mail orders.  There are three total versions of Sundance in the U. S.:  Sundance (pictured above), So Soft Sundance, and Twice as Fancy Sundance.  Also there is a Baby Sundance.

Rainbow Ponies (rainbow colored hair and glittery symbols)

Click here to see Rainbow Ponies mint in the original packages, with a detailed description of accessories.

The Rainbow Ponies returned the next year with a new look.  They had the same glittery symbols (although some have metallic symbols), but the color scheme of these ponies were different.  They were brilliant colored with orange red, pink, blue, and chartreuse hair colors (example of colors pictured right).  The first set of Rainbow Ponies has colors more standard to the common rainbow colors. The first set is also much more common than this set.  Some of the first set was also released again.

These were released in the U. K. and in Europe.  Other than the first editions, there were others variations of Rainbow Ponies.   Also, in a much later issue Baby Rainbow Ponies  would appear.  There are the Rainbow Curl Ponies, and various ponies with multicolored hair (like the Brush 'n Grow Ponies, for example).   Also in Germany, special Rainbow Ponies were sold.  Some international versions of the rainbow ponies do not have glittery symbols; all of these have an international alternate.  To go to International Alternates click here.

There are several versions of these that were sold over in Europe and abroad that have painted on or metallic symbols.  They are listed as International symbol variants.

Flutterbye
(Pegasus) is orange with purple glitter butterflies.  She has purple eyes.  There is also a Spanish version of Flutterbye with three butterflies instead of four.

Confetti (earth pony) is white with purple & green glitter confetti.  She has purple eyes.  There is a version of Confetti sold in the U. K. and Europe that is in the shy pose.  Her name is Confetti Wearing Wedding Bells and she is a bridal pony.  There is also a No Country version of Confetti.

Pinwheel
(unicorn) is pink with four orange pinwheels (blue holders).  She has blue eyes.  Note that her symbol is not glittery and is prone to fading.  There is also a Spanish version of Pinwheel.

Starflower
(unicorn) is blue with five purple glitter stars.  She has green eyes.

Trickles
(earth pony) is yellow with three red glitter watering cans (each have drops falling from the spout).  She has green eyes.

Tickle (Pegasus) is purple with three metallic gold feathers.  Her symbol is not really glittery.  She has blue eyes.

Sea Ponies

Click here to see Sea Ponies mint in the original packages, with a detailed description of accessories.

Sea Ponies were special seahorse type ponies, with the standard My Little Pony head shape.  Each had a ball type weight in it to balance the body and make it actually float in the water.  There is a small round hole behind one of the ears to release water (close up pictured right).  Each came with a special display shell, which had suckers that will attach to your bathtub.  Also each came with two combs and a ribbon.

This was the second edition of adult Sea Ponies to come out, and also the last.  These versions have brighter colors and brighter shells.  There are also now two types of shells, the standard clam shell and a shell resembling a conch.  Some of these even had curly hair and streaks in their manes.  This edition is much less common than the first versions.

In the first edition of Sea Ponies, there were only three in the set.  These only came with clam shells, no conch shells.  There were also three International adult see pony variations, more information in the above hyperlink.

Unicorns and Pegasus

Click here to see Sea Ponies mint in the original packages, with a detailed description of accessories.

The Unicorns and Pegasus actually were given that name by Hasbro, according to its brochures.  There were four unicorns and two Pegasus, just as in the previous year.  Each has a glittery symbol and unicorns had special streak of hair that was a different color from the rest of their hair.   Each is unique and are often some of collector's favorites.  These are the Second Edition of Unicorns and Pegasus.  The first set of Unicorns and Pegasus includes ponies such as Moondancer and Firefly.

With this set came a new, unique unicorn pose.  Powder and Skyflier stand with their heads turned toward the stars.

These were sold in the U. K. and abroad.  However, several countries had variations of these versions.

Gusty
(unicorn) is white with green hair with red streak and five sparkly purple maple leaves.  She has green eyes, close to color of mane and tail.  In the U. K. and Europe there was a Non So Soft version of Gusty.  There is also an Italian version.

Heart Throb
(Pegasus) is lavender with pink hair with pink hearts with sparkly silver wings. The glitter may fade and she may be left only with the hearts that are painted on.  There is an Italian version that has painted on wings.

Powder
(unicorn) is purple with white hair with a red streak and sparkly silver snowflakes.  She has light purple eyes.  There is an Italian version with metallic snowflakes.

Sparkler
(unicorn) is blue with purple hair with a red streak and sparkly blue diamonds.  She has purple eyes.

Surprise (Pegasus) is white with chartreuse hair and sparkly purple balloons.  She has purple eyes.

Skyflier (unicorn) is pink with red hair with white streak and sparkly purple kites.  She has purple eyes.

Some international versions of the Unicorns and Pegasus do not have glittery symbols; all of these have an international alternate.  To go to International Alternates click here.
