My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (Q-Z)
Year 5 (1986)
Year 5 was an odd year for My Little Pony. Oddly enough, about half of the ponies sold are pretty hard to find. The other half, are pretty common. I'm not exactly why this is. Some new friends joined the other ponies. There were now Pony Friends, unique animals, in that classic style. There were also new Big Brother Ponies, that had special hats and bandanas. Also new were the Princess Ponies, royal ponies with bushwoolie pals. So Soft Sleepy Newborns were huge ponies that weren't really soft, but they were big and cute.
Twinkle Ponies and So Soft Ponies returned from Year 4 (and for some reason these new versions are harder to find than the old ones). Baby Sea Ponies returned with a new look. Also Baby Ponies now have a first tooth. Flutter Ponies returned with still frail wings, but bolder colors.
Other innovations include the Twice As Fancy Ponies that have symbols covering their entire bodies and Newborn Twins. The Newborn Twins were the smallest ponies yet. What's better than a cute, small baby pony? Two of them. They also came with quite a few accessories, all in doubles, of course.
The Party Pack from Year 4 was a birthday pack, this year a slumber pack would be issued. The Slumber Party pack came with all a pony needs to be happy. Also, several playsets were issued and specialty ponies with them.
Twinkle-Eyed Ponies (Second Edition)

Instead of the regular My Little Pony eye mold these
ponies have jewel
twinkle eyes.
The twinkle eyes themselves came in various colors: pink, purple, green, yellow,
etc. Also Twinkle Eye Ponies had special multicolored hair: three
different colors in the mail and in the tail.
This was the second edition of Twinkle Eyes to come out,
but the third actual set. The First and Second Releases of Twinkle Ponies came out in Year 4. These seem to be more coveted than Year 4's editions.
Bright Eyes (earth pony) is blue with white, pink, orange, red
hair and an
alarm clock.
Quackers (earth pony) is white with blue, green, yellow, pink hair and a
duck holding an umbrella. Quackers also has a first
tooth daughter.
Locket (Pegasus) is pink with white, pink, purple, orange hair and three
keys (two dark pink and one purple). I pictured a close up below, because
the symbol is difficult to see in the insert.
Mimic (unicorn) is pale green with chartreuse, pink, red, white hair and
a red parrot. She is pictured below.
Tic-Tac-Toe (earth pony) is yellow with red, pink, green hair and a green
and red tic-tac-toe game. Tic-Tac-Toe also has a first
tooth daughter.

Twice As Fancy Ponies
(First Edition)

The Twice as Fancy Ponies had symbols totally covering their bodies. Each is very unique in color and pattern, with everything from lollipops to strawberries. One even has glittery symbols, Milky Way. Each also has a symbol on the cheek or forehead.
Another Second Edition of Twice as Fancy Ponies were issued the following year. Also, special Mail Order Twice As Fancy Babies were made.
Dancing Butterflies (Pegasus) is yellow
and is covered with pink
and blue butterflies, with a pink butterfly on her forehead. She has blue
eyes.
Milky Way (unicorn) is deep pink with white hair
with blue streak in her mane
and has silver stars that are glittery and three stars on her right cheek. She
is the only TAF of this edition to have a glittery symbol. There is also an International
version of her that has white, painted on stars. She has lavender
eyes.
Love Melody (earth pony) is purple with
pink hair and has pink hearts
that are strung together with white ribbons. She has two small hearts
strung together on her right cheek (for close see above example).
Sugarberry (earth pony) is white with red hair and is covered with
strawberries that are strung by green vines, and one red strawberry on her nose
(pictured right).
Sweet Tooth (earth pony) is aqua blue or a with pink hair and has blue and pink
lollipops covering her body. She has a small pink and blue lollipop on her
right cheek (pictured right).
Up, Up, and Away (earth pony) is dark pink with light pink hair and has
green and yellow balloons, and one green balloon on her right cheek (pictured
right). She has blue eyes.

Another issue of a type of baby Sea Pony. This would be the third release of a Baby Sea Pony. These were special though, with their very own symbols. Each had a painted on necklace, pictured right is an example (note that she is tilted to one side).

Dipper is white with pink and green hair and has
a dark pink
long, spiral shell
necklace and came with an aqua turtle float. She has dark pink fin
highlights.
Surfy is yellow with pink and purple hair and has a green
conch shell necklace and came with a blue and dark pink alligator float.
She has green fin highlights.
Sea Spray is dark pink with white and yellow hair and has a purple
star shell necklace and came with a green and blue lobster float.
She has purple fin highlights.
Sea Breeze is aqua with yellow and purple hair and has a pink shell
necklace and came with a pink and purple lobster. She has pink fin
highlights.
Salty is blue with purple and reddish hair and has a large pink shell
necklace and came with a yellow and orange lobster float. She has pink fin highlights.
Wavy is purple with orange and dark pink hair and has a white
swirling shell
necklace and came with a pink and green frog float. She has white fin
highlights.

Pink Dreams (flutter
pony) is
aqua green with dark pink hair and a
pink sleeping cat symbol. She has three tiny pink hearts on her right
cheek.
Pillow Talk (earth pony) is a Twice As Fancy Pony. She has a purple-ish
body and yellow, blue, and white hair. She is very different than
other TAF's. Symbols of a cloud with crescent moons and pillows cover the
sides
of her purple body and not her back.
She has a tiny white pillow and yellow crescent moon on her right cheek.
Nightcap (earth pony) is a first tooth baby pony who is yellow with
purple hair and three nightcaps as her symbol.
Sleepy Head and Sleep Tight (earth ponies) They are newborn
twins. Sleepy Head is blue with pink hair with a deep pink and blue pajamas
symbol.
Sleep Tight is
pink with blue hair with a yellow and aqua cradle symbol.
The pack itself looked was packaged much like the party
pack. Accessories included: (left to right) sleeping bag (white
with rainbows and blocks motif), blue television set (sticker decal picturing
Truly), blue telephone with purple receiver, purple moon comb, pony twister game
board and spinning piece, pony magazines, box of cookies (pink box), blue
turntable (record player) with purple wheel, blue tub of popcorn, 2 pairs of
party pants for Sleep Tight and Sleepy Head (pink and white striped), 5
ribbons.
Finally, the pack came with 5 nightcaps for each of the five
ponies: two pink and white striped with purple trim (Sleepy Head and Sleep
Tight), pink, yellow, blue flowers and green trim (Pink Dreams), pink, blue,
green stripes with pink trim (Pillow Talk), pink, green, yellow stars with
yellow trim (Nightcap).

So Soft Ponies
(Second Edition)

The idea for a plastic pony that was actually soft was a smart one. The So Soft Ponies were covered in this velvet like fur. People who do not know MLP terms commonly refer to So Softs as Fuzzy, Furry, or Flocked.
Here is the Second Edition of Soft Softs, the first was issued in Year 4. These seem more sought after than many of the first editions. Hasbro also did a better job of color and symbol design on these; you can actually tell what many of the symbols actually are.

Angel (earth pony) is blue with three orange angel fish.
Bangles (unicorn) is pink with blue hair with dark pink streak and hearts
and beads.
Crumpet (earth pony) is yellow with a pink teapot and cup.
Twilight (Pegasus) is purple with pink hair with a candle in holder.
Taffy (earth pony) is white with pink hair and three pink wrapped
candies.
Hippity Hop was re-released from Year 4.
She is pictured also. She is lavender with pink hair and three white
bunnies.
This is the second release of so-softs.
Soft Sleepy Newborns (all earth ponies and very large-- nine inches tall)

The So Soft Sleepy Newborns were three of a kind, nothing
even similar was produced. They had hard plastic bodies, pony hair,
symbols, and eyes that opened and closed. The eyes were much like the Beddy
Bye Eyes ponies, but on a larger scale. They had the glass-like
appearance. Each came with panties, bonnet, pacifier, and
brush.
Hushabye is white with purple hair and a pink and blue teddy bear
symbol. The teddy bear's body is pink with a white tummy and ears and a blue
ribbon around his neck. She came with pink bonnet and white panties, blue pacifier, and pink
brush.
Pink Dreams is pink with aqua hair and a duckie pull toy
symbol. The duck's body is white, and it's beak, wheels, and pull string
are yellow. She came with aqua bonnet and aqua panties, aqua pacifier, and blue
brush.
Sweet Dreams is purple with dark pink hair and white and dark pink
baby bottle symbol. The bottle base is white and the nipple is a dark pink
with a a dark pink ribbon streaming from it. She came with white bonnet and panties, white pacifier
and purple brush.
