My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (P-Z)
Year 6 (1987)

Year six was a grand year of second
edition ponies. The Twice as Fancy Ponies came back with more innovative
symbols, including Munchy's Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and Pickles. Three new Big
Brothers were released much like those previous, no radical differences.
The new Princess Ponies come out with more radical colors and tinsel
forelocks. Also there is a new edition of Newborn Twins. Not all ponies were second editions
though, Year six is the year of issue for the well beloved Summerwing
Ponies. Much more sturdy than flutters and with bright butterfly wings,
these ponies were an instant success. Also Hasbro came up with the idea of
Pony Friends, new animal friends for all the ponies in Ponyland. This year is also the beginning of many
new ponies up on the high end of 1980's technology. Brush 'n Grow (hair
really grows), Peek-a-Boo (head really moves), Sweetberry (smells sweet), Sundae
Best (smells sweet), Watercolor Baby Sea Ponies (change color), Magic Message
(symbols reveal a special hidden symbol underneath), and Happy Tails Ponies
(tails swirl and twirl) all have unique abilities that set them apart from Year
5 Ponies. These "do something" ponies will become the norm for
years to come. Also Mummy Charms were sold with
specially marked packages. Each tiny charm came in different colors and
with different symbols, just like actual ponies.Peek-a-boo Baby PoniesClick
here to see the Peek-a-boo Ponies mint in the original packages!Peek-a-boo ponies have special joints (ball and socket
joint)
that allow the pony to
turn its head. The body is a little larger than the head, unlike most
other ponies which are just glued at the joint. The head itself is ball
shaped on the inside, allowing it a free range of motion. There are two female and two male earth ponies and a
female unicorn and female Pegasus. Some of these have a first tooth.
The males have feathered feet; these are the first male boys to have this
feature. All came with a special bib that only Peek-a-boo Baby Ponies
have. Similar Sets: Playtime
Baby Brother Ponies. Though all of these are male, they have the same
move-able heads. Thanks to Joanne for use of the group photograph below.

The first edition Princess ponies were
the beginning of a long line of royalty. There are two editions of
Princess Ponies. The first edition came
with Bushwoolies in Year 5.In this year they returned with a new
look. This edition of Princess Ponies had a tinsel forelock.
They also have tinsel in their tails and manes as well. They retained the
metal, jeweled symbols.Spotting the difference in an Edition 1
and Edition 2 Princess Pony:
First Editions came with Bushwoolies, Second Editions didn't.
First Editions had tinsel in their hair, but Second Editions had tinsel and a forelock of tinsel on the forehead.
First Editions had less extreme colors (in most cases) when compared to the oddly colored Second Editions.

Summer Wing Ponies (wings resemble butterfly
wings--symbols are bugs or birds) Click
here to see the Summer Wing Ponies mint in the original packages!
Summer wing ponies can easily be confused with Windy wing
ponies which will come out in Year 7. Summer
wing ponies have symbols that are bugs or birds and Windy wing ponies have
symbols that are related to the sky. Each has a symbol plus a cheek for
forehead symbols. Some of the cheek and forehead symbols are the same and
some are different. All of them have a small build, in some countries they
are considered to be babies. The size of shape of the head very closely
resembles a baby pony. These have straight hair, though the tail is
wavy. The mane is longer than a standard pony mane, and thinner
also. There are two different poses. The first pose can be viewed by
the entire top row of the photograph below; the pony is standing foreword with
the head upward and the left front hoof slightly bent. The second pose,
shown on the bottom row, is a sort of pose with the head lowered.
Each pony had wings made of plastic. Each design was unique in both
shape in color. You can see a close up of each wing next to the
information on that pony. These wings were much more sturdily designed than the Flutter
Ponies (whom Summerwings are sometimes called by accident). Characteristics of Summer Wing Ponies: have bird or
bee related symbols as afore mentioned, have either a cheek or nose symbol as
well, have colorful plastic wings, have smaller faces (more like Baby Ponies
than adults), have long manes and tails. In other countries these are specially called Babies
(for example in Italy they are referred to as Baby Flap Flap) and may often be
referred to as babies instead of adults. These were sold in the U.
K.Thanks to Joanne for use of the group photograph below.
