My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (Q-Z)
Year 7 (1988)

Year 7 was Hasbro busiest year for the actual My Little Pony line (disregarding subsequent lines like Dream Beauties etc.). It was a totally innovative year for Hasbro, nearly every set this year was a totally new idea. A nice lot of baby ponies are issued this year, including a full set of adorable Baby Brother Ponies. Summer Wing Ponies became Windy Wing Ponies and find their place among collector's favorites. Also new adult lines sport a unique flare distinct to each group of ponies, Perfume Puffs have enormously puffy hair, Sparkle Ponies have sparkle filled bodies that glisten from head to toe, Merry Go Round ponies are beautiful intricately designed carousel ponies, and Candy Cane Ponies are Sweet Smelling Ponies with huge bouncing curls. Also this year brought the family sets of ponies, Loving Family Ponies, which came in sets of three: Mommy, Daddy, and Baby. This is also the third and last issue of U. S. Megan and Sundance. Megan gets an altogether new look; much like a Hasbro Moondreamer.
This will be the last "traditional" year for Hasbro, after this year you will see them experiment with various ideas that vary from the norm of the My Little Ponies line. The years that follow include Dream Beauties, Petites, and My Little Puppy, Kitty and Bunny. Also, set numbers will change from the traditional six.

Sparkle
Ponies are the first ponies produced that have sparkles in the molds of the
bodies. Their bodies glisten from head to toe. The Sparkle Ponies
also have sky related symbols and tinsel in the hair. There are six ponies
in this set, each is a different color. There is one unicorn, one Pegasus,
and four earth ponies. These were sold in the U. K.
There are two versions of Sparkle ponies, the store version and the mail order versions. The mail order versions of the Sparkle Ponies differ slightly from that of the store versions; also the mail order versions have symbols on their cheeks. There are also slight color differences. The most striking difference is that the Mail Order versions have tiny symbols on their cheeks; two have different colored hair. The Mail Order versions were not sold in the U. K.

Sweetheart Sister Ponies are a new type of My Little Pony; they are the teenagers of Ponyland. Each Sister has a tall and slender body and slender nose (muzzle). Sweetheart Sister Ponies would become a regular of the My Little Pony line after this set was issued.
Each
has a flower earring (close up pictured right), and discreet eye shadow
above the eyelid and thicker lashes than most adult ponies. They also have
long hair.
This set of Sweetheart Sister Ponies each have straight hair, a forelock, and a bouquet of flower's symbol. These came with light colored bodies and darker hair; each has a soft color scheme. They are always earth ponies.
Other Sweetheart Sister Pony Sets: Glittery Sweetheart Sister Ponies (Year 8) and Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister Ponies (Year 8). In Year 9, Pretty Ponies replaced Sweetheart Sister Ponies. These are the same as Sweetheart Sisters but they lack the single flower earring. Other Pretty Pony style sets include: Sundazzle Ponies (no earrings; Year 10) and Sweet Kisses Ponies (no earrings; Year 10).
Each
pony also comes with a mesh ribbon tied to the mane
(eye shadow also matches earring and ribbon) (matches the color of the earring). See the close up picture on
the right for a picture of the ribbon. Each also comes with a flower
brush.
The also come in three poses, which would become the standard Sweetheart Sister Pony's poses: strutting (Dainty is in this pose) and standing (Flowerburst's pose). Walking (Frilly Flower's pose). Walking and strutting are similar but the strutting pose has the right hoof jutting forward (similar to Posey's pose) and the walking pose has the left hoof forward.
The Sweetheart Sister Ponies were offered in the U. K., except for Frilly Flower and Fancy Flower. All that were included in the U. K. are pictured in the photograph below.

Windy Wing Ponies (ponies with decorative wings that resemble butterfly wings)

Windy Wing Ponies can easily be confused with Summer Wing Ponies which came out in Year 6. There are is a key difference to note between the two sets: Summer Wing ponies have symbols that are either bugs or bees and Summer and Windy Wing Ponies have symbols that are related to the sky.
Each pony had wings made of plastic. Each design was unique in both
shape in color. These wings were much more sturdily designed than the Flutter
Ponies (whom Windy Wings are sometimes called by
accident). Note that each set of wings is unique.
The wings are made of a thicker plastic material that are jointed into a square
in the center. For a close up of where the wings are jointed, please
see the thumbnail, right.
Characteristics of Windy Wing Ponies: have sky related symbols as afore mentioned, have either a cheek or nose symbol as well, have colorful plastic wings, have smaller faces (more like Baby Ponies than adults), have long manes and tails.
There are two poses of Windy Wing Ponies. The first pose has the head facing forward and the left leg is bent slightly. Cool Breeze, Starry Wings, Sun Glider, and Flurry are in this pose. The second pose has the the head pointing downward. Moon Jumper and Whirly are in this pose.
In other countries these are specially called Babies (for example in Italy they are referred to as Baby Flap Flap) and may often be referred to as babies instead of adults. These were sold in the U. K.

Cool Breeze is green and has an aqua green palm tree as her
symbol with a smaller one on her forehead.
Note that the forehead version doesn't have the sun like the symbol (she
thumbnail to the right). Her wings blue, pink, and green. She has purple
eyes (may appear dark pink or a fushcia or violet tone).
Thanks to Pati for the forehead closeup of Cool Breeze. Thanks to
Jennifer Rhinebeck to the full photograph of Cool Breeze.

Flurry is purple with pink hair and a
white snowflake as her symbol and a
white heart on her cheek. Her wings are yellow with pink and blue rectangles.
She has baby blue eyes. Her hair will often fade to a light pink or
white. Thanks to Joanna for these symbol photographs.

Moon Jumper is lavender with blue hair
and a pink cow jumping over the
moon. Her forehead has a pink moon symbol (pictured right). Her wings are striped blue, yellow, and pink.
She has purple eyes. Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of this
photograph.

Starry Wings is yellow with pink hair
and has a blue moon and stars
symbol and blue moon/star on her forehead. Her wings are striped pink and
yellow. She has pink eyes.

Sunglider is pink with aqua hair and a yellow sun and clouds (smiling
sun)
symbol with a
yellow cloud on her left cheek. Her wings are yellow with blue and pink rectangles.
She has aqua green eyes.

Whirly is blue with chartreuse hair. She has a purple sun and three flying birds as her
symbol
and
two purple flying birds on her cheek. She has wings with blue, pink, and yellow.
She has dark purple eyes. She is really the only Windy Wing Pony that
could be confused with a Summerwing Pony due to her bird symbol. Thanks to
Heather Wilson for use of the symbol photographs; she retains all
copyrights.
