My Little Ponies and Friends (U.S.) (P-Z)
Year 9 (1990)

Year 9 was a busy year for the My Little Pony line; many new special sets will make it an interesting year. Glow 'n Show ponies are unique ponies that have clear bodies filled with hearts and stars, Secret Surprise Ponies are large ponies with a special compartment and key, Precious Pocket Ponies have 3-d symbols, Rockin' Beat Ponies have that post 80's music flare, Pretty Princess Ponies are your standard fairy tail type toy, and Teeny Tiny Ponies are the smallest ponies produced. It was a year for innovation, but there were a few sets that resembled ponies from past years: Baby Ballerina Ponies (instead of adults), Baby Rainbow Ponies (instead of adults), and Pretty Ponies, which were basically Sweetheart Sister Ponies.
Other specialty sets were issued: the Chuck E. Cheese Baby Pony were being sold in Chuck E. Cheese pizza chains. A new Firefly was issued with a special tape set from the 1984, Firefly's Adventure. Also, Hasbro was busy producing Petite Ponies and My Little Puppy, Kitty and Bunny.
Precious Pocket Ponies (3-Dimensional Upraised Symbols)
Precious Pocket Ponies were innovative ponies that have a dimensional symbol tacked onto the left rear flank of a pony (when this is removed you can see three hole marks where the object attaches). A silver string attached to the object leads out to a small object that fits into the other. For example, Bubblefish has a three dimensional fish bowl that has a little fish that fits into it.
The pony, itself, is larger than the average ponies.
This is a trend of some Year 9 and Year 10 ponies. The Secret
Surprise set of ponies are also larger than the average adult
(understandably so, since it needs to be larger for the compartment inside of
it). The Sweet
Talkin' Ponies are also larger than the average adults, actually bearing a
very similar mold to the Precious Pocket Ponies. The Sweet Talkin' Ponies
share the exact same pose as Bubblefish and Sweet Pocket (both
below), except they have open mouth so it appears that they are actually
talking. The eyes of Sweet Talkin' and Precious Pocket Ponies also
vary. Note the Precious Pocket eye (pictured right) with a total of four
eyelashes. The Sweet Talkin' Ponies have thicker eye lines and many
lashes.
Precious Pocket Ponies also have two toned manes and a single colored tail. All are earth ponies. Their poses are unique to only this set, besides the slight variation of the Sweet Talkin' Ponies (discussed above). In the U. K. they were sold under the name: Pocket Friends Ponies.
Bubblefish (earth pony) is pink with blue and dark pink hair
and a blue tail. ![]()
Her symbol is an upraised clear fishbowl with a yellow
fish is inside attached by a string. The bowl is sitting on a table with
bubbles coming out of the fishbowl (these are not 3-D). She has aqua blue
eyes and shares the same pose as Sweet Pocket. Her U. K. name is Wriggle
Pocket. Thanks to Heather Wilson for the symbol closeup on the right;
she retains all copyrights. Thanks to Inglemist for the close up of the
fish.

Bunny Hop (earth pony) is white with pink and purple hair and a pink tail.
Her
symbol is an upraised purple top hat with a pink bunny attached by a string
(pictured left). The hat is next to a magic wand that is not painted on.
She has medium or deep blue eyes and shares the same pose as Li'l Pocket.
Her U. K. name is Hopping Pocket.

Li'l Pocket (earth pony) is a blue with blue and pink hair and a blue
tail. Her
symbol is a pink piggy bank (upraised heart on bum) with a purple penny attached
by a string (it reads "pony penny"). The pig is next to a butterfly,
hearts, and flowers that are painted on. She shares the same pose as Bunny
Hop. She has purple eyes. Her U. K. name is Jingle Pocket.

Sweet Pocket (earth pony) is purple with pink and blue hair and a pink
tail. Her
symbol
is a flower is lovely petals with a yellow bee attached by a string. The
flower's stem painted on her body. She has aqua eyes and shares the same
pose as Bubblefish. Her U. K. name is Singing Pocket. Thanks to
Melissa for use of the close up photograph, visit her site at the Royal
Fortress.

Precious pocket ponies are slightly larger by about a half inch. Their
symbols are located on the left sides of their bodies.
Pretty Ponies (tall, slender bodies)
Pretty Ponies are similar to Sweetheart Sister Ponies, almost identical, except for symbol differences and Pretty Ponies have no earring. The original set of Sweetheart Sister Ponies are remarkable similar to the pretty ponies in color and style. Other Sweetheart Sister style ponies released before the Pretty Ponies include: Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister Ponies and Glittery Sweetheart Sister Ponies.
Pretty Ponies come in dainty colors, though they aren't all pastel, they still have a soft look to them. The Pretty Ponies would become the trend for later releases of the Sweetheart Sister mold; all ponies in this mold lack the earring common to the previous Sweetheart Sister Ponies. The last two sets to be released were issued in Year 10 (no earrings): Sundazzle and Sweet Kisses Ponies.
These ponies were not sold in the U. K.
Note in the photograph below the color
differences in Rosy Love (top row) and Beautybloom (bottom). Both have a
pink appearance, but Beautybloom is much more of an orange hue.

Thanks to Jennifer Rhinebeck for use of this photograph.
Beautybloom is pale orange or a peachy pink with orange hair and
has a blue heart-shaped box of candy. She is in a standing position and
has blue eyes. Please note: don't confuse her with Rosy Love.
Both ponies look pink, but Beautybloom has orange undertones. Thanks to
Inglemist for photographs of Gardenglow.

Flower Dream is blue and
has a dark pink heart with a flower heart with a small, solid heart inside
it (has a stencil appearance). She is in a standing pose and has pale blue
eyes.
Gardenglow is light lavender with lavender hair and has a pink heart
with two blue belles and flowers inside of it. She is in a standing pose,
but not the same pose as Flower Dream and Beautybloom. Her face is
pointing forward instead of to the side. She has an almost pink
appearance, not to be confused with carnation pink Rosy Love or orange pink
Beautybloom. She has blue eyes. Thanks to Inglemist for
photographs of Gardenglow.

Rosy Love is pink and has two green birds with a green heart around
them. Her symbol has a stencil appearance. She is in a strutting
pose and has blue eyes. Please note: don't confuse her with
Beautybloom who may be mistaken for pink, but has a more orange tone to her.
Beautybloom's symbol is a box of candy, there are no birds on her symbol.

Rockin' Beat Ponies were the rock stars of the pony world. Each pony came with brilliantly colored hair and bodies, bright eye shadow, and guitar shaped brushes. There are three earth ponies and one unicorn, which is odd because usually when there is a unicorn there is also a Pegasus.
These ponies bear little resemblance to other ponies. They do share one familiarity with Tropical Ponies and Sweetheart Sister Ponies: eye shadow. One of them (Sweet Notes) also has crimped hair like the Sundazzle Ponies. There is also another set of ponies that have squiggle symbols, the Pretty Mane Ponies, but they look nothing like the Rockin' Beat Ponies. So, there are bits and pieces of these ponies that bear similarities with others, but they are pretty much unique.
This set sold Internationally and is known as Rock Star Ponies; this set came with the purple version of Pretty Beat.

Secret Surprise Ponies (large earth ponies with saddles that open with a plastic key)
Click here to see Secret Surprise Ponies Mint in Package.
Secret Surprise Ponies came with a key and surprise in their saddles and
also a
bow comb. Each pony is substantially larger than the regular sized earth
pony, as a matter of fact they are the largest My Little Ponies (except for My
Pretty Pony and So Soft Sleepy Newborns). They have removable saddle blankets that cover a square hidden
compartment underneath. The saddle blanket would open when a key is turned
in the chest mechanism. The chest mechanism is pictured above right. Another
set of ponies also have saddle blankets, the Merry Go Round Ponies. The
Merry Go Round Ponies look like carousel horses and are regular size.
Each pony also came with a heart beaded necklace
or a ring.
The actual key has a pony motif with hearts
surrounding the pony (inside the heart shaped top of the key). There is a
bow shape mid-line and a swiveling stem.
